The Problem
The probiotic category was built around a fiber-fed gut. Most well-known strains were studied in populations eating standard Western or Mediterranean diets, where prebiotic fiber feeds the bacteria, plant polyphenols shape the microbiome, and bile loads stay relatively modest.
A carnivore or strict keto diet is a very different environment:
Animal fat triggers significant bile release, and probiotic strains that tolerate bile behave differently than strains that don't.
The fiber-fermenting bacteria that dominate plant-fed guts have far less to work with. The microbiome shifts toward protein and fat fermenters.
A meat-heavy diet alters how quickly food moves through the gut and how acidic different sections of the intestine become.

We focused on three Lactobacillus strains that show up repeatedly in published research in more and more scientific journals relevant to high-fat, low-fiber diets:
